Foundation Scripture: Psalm 65:11; Proverbs 26:7

Sunday 22nd December 2013

Last week, in the message, 'I Am Not Coming out Empty Handed', we established that there is a testimony to be extracted from the year 2013. We also understood that 2014 has been crowned with goodness; it is a year that is overflowing with the Lord's goodness, His blessings, His favour and His advancement. The pain, hurt and disappointments of 2013 will not follow us into the coming year and in addition, we are not coming out of 2013 empty-handed.

Today, we are going to continue our journey of understanding: We must recognise that although God has a great plan for 2014, it is essential for our minds to grasp this truth in order for it to become our experiential reality. God has a truly amazing plan for our lives in 2014 however unless we embrace and internalise this truth in our belief system, it will not be actualised. The reason for this is that your mind essentially creates your life's experience; your life is a direct expression of your thoughts. Proverbs 26:7 which says, '...as a man thinks in his heart, so is he', confirms this principle. It is essential therefore, that we are deliberate and intentional about what we permit to go on in our minds. .

Psalm 65: 11 confirms God's intention for us in the coming year saying, 'He crowns the year with goodness'. This shows that God has done His part; He has already crowned, encircled and surrounded the year with goodness. Every component of 2014: the months, the weeks, the days, minutes, hours and seconds have all been saturated with the goodness of God. God is mindful of you which means that you are on His mind. He is not therefore wondering what 2014 holds for you or leaving it to chance; He has already gone ahead of you and filled the entire year with His goodness. It now left to you to extract the goodness of God as your own reality.

3 John 2 says, 'Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.' In the Hebrew language, the word translated here as 'just' indicates 'to the degree that' or 'to the extent that'. This scripture can therefore be paraphrased as, 'I pray that you may prosper and be in health to the extent that your soul prospers'. We must therefore pay careful attention to the state of our minds and the thoughts that we permit. The state of your mind will determine your prosperity; your thinking determines your life. If I were to examine your thinking, I would be able to make a very accurate assessment of where you will end up in life. If you have been indulging thoughts of failure and defeat you need to be careful as whatever you fill your mind with will determine your life's outcomes.

To experience the goodness that God has planned for you, you must be deliberate about meditating on the goodness of God. Your mind has the capacity to set the limits and boundaries of your life. You cannot rise above or progress beyond the limits and boundaries established in your thinking. You must programme your mind based on God's word in order for your experience to line up with God's intention for your life. The word of God as regards the coming year is that He has 'crowned the year with goodness'. This is quite irrespective of what you are facing or how you are feeling; feelings are subject to change, however the word of the Lord is tried and tested and remains true. God has prepared a glorious year for you; a year crowned with His goodness. It is for you to overcome the barriers in your mind and programme your thinking to expect the goodness of God in order to actualise it. You must put the word of God in your mouth and thereby programme your mind for success.

In the account of Joshua 1:8 we can see this principle established. Here, in the immediate aftermath of Moses' death, God told Joshua, 'This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.' If we study this scripture carefully, we see that there is a pattern embedded in it; let's look at it closely:

'This book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth' – this deals with your words;
'...but you shall meditate on it' - this deals with your mind;
'...that you may observe to do' – this deals with your actions;
'...for then you will make your way prosperous and then you will have good success' – the outcome is success.

God was essentially reprogramming Joshua's mind. At the time at which this instruction was given, Joshua was reluctant to take on the task of conquering the Promised Land. He was in mourning for Moses and knowing that the Land was filled with giants, was no doubt less than enthusiastic about the task ahead of him. God had to re-programme Joshua's mind in order to enable the Promised Land to be taken. God therefore instructed Joshua to allow the word of God, (the book of the Law) to change his thinking. He was instructed to put the word of God in his mouth in order for the change to his thinking to occur which would then enable him to carry out the actions that would result in success.

Good success therefore starts with the word of God; it is the means by which the mind is programmed and the outcome of 2014 is determined. God has filled the year with His goodness. We must confess the word of God in order for this to be our reality. 2014 is a good year for you. It is an exceptional year for you, irrespective of what you experienced in 2013. In The Message translation of Matthew 9:29 we are told 'He touched their eyes and said, "Become what you believe". We are what we believe; be careful therefore about what you allow to go on in your mind. 2014 is a glorious, abundant, victorious and joy-filled year. You will be what you believe. Your reality is the product of your thinking. You will no longer be chasing after blessings, they will be chasing after you.

Philippians 4:8 (NLT) says, 'And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honourable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise'. What you fix your thoughts on determines your outcome; the input of our thinking determines the outcome of our lives. If you are not deliberate and intentional about what you fill your mind with, the enemy will not pass up on the opportunity to fill your mind, and therefore your life, with negativity, failure and defeat. What you look at, what you listen to and what you say are important as your eyes, your ears and your mouth are gates to your mind. The words that people speak around you affect your thinking. Be vigilant about disengaging your mind from anything and everything that contradicts the truth of God's word.

When we confess the word of God at the beginning of every service, it is not that we are simply passing time. We are very conscious that what we confess affects our thinking and becomes our reality. The word of the Lord must not depart from your mouth in 2014. You must confess it over your life, declaring boldly, "I am blessed, I am successful, I am victorious, I am above only and not beneath, I am the head and not the tail". When you confess the truth of God's word, contrary thoughts of failure, defeat simply do not fit; they become as ill-fitting to your spirit as wearing the wrong-sized clothes. Choose your thoughts and expect to experience God's goodness. Seeing is not believing in the Kingdom; you have got to believe it before you see it.

I read of an account of researchers who carried out an experiment which involved placing a rat in a large container filled with water in a completely pitch-dark room; within 3 minutes the rat had drowned. In identical circumstances, save that in the second room there was a beam of light, the rat swam for 36 hours. The light made all the difference. The beam of light that we have is the word of God. We cannot go around expecting God's promises not to be fulfilled in our lives as we have the light of word of God. We have the responsibility to counter the enemy's lies with the word of God.
In the account of Abraham in the book of Genesis, God told him in chapter 17:4-5 (AMP) 'As for Me, behold, My covenant (solemn pledge) is with you, and you shall be the father of many nations. Nor shall your name any longer be Abram [high, exalted father]; but your name shall be Abraham [father of a multitude], for I have made you the father of many nations.' At the time at which God spoke these words to Abraham, he was elderly and had no child and yet God changed his name, explaining, " ...for I have made you the father of many nations." God used the past tense, despite there being no evidence of what He had said being in existence. Abraham's interaction with God in Genesis 15 reveals how conscious he was of his then childlessness, 'Lord God what will you give me, seeing I go childless...' God changed Abram's name to Abraham, which meant 'father of many'. What was God doing, you may ask? He was re-programming Abraham's mind. The change of name meant that Abraham would identify himself with the promise that God had made to him. Being called by a new name programmed his mind and the promise that God had made to him saturated his belief system, such that he no longer saw himself as childless.

Romans 4: 17-18, says, (as it is written, "I have made you a father of many nations"]) in the presence of Him whom he believed—God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, "So shall your descendants be." What is it that gave Abraham the ability to hope against hope? His mind had been re-programmed and he believed that he was the father of many nations.

In this season, God is calling us to be intentional about our thoughts. They must line up with the truth of God's word. 2014 is a glorious year. Full of the goodness of God. As you programme your mind to succeed, to prosper, to advance and to experience answers to your prayers, this will be your reality.
