…The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.

Since the beginning of the year when we started studying the theme of “Divine Influence” as a Church, we have looked at the story of Joseph in some depth. When Joseph was brought before Pharaoh to interpret his dream, he was able to accurately interpret the dream and to advise Pharaoh on Egypt’s economic strategy, and he was instantly made Prime Minister of Egypt. However, we must note that before Joseph attempted to interpret Pharaoh’s dream, he told Pharaoh that interpretations were from God and that only God could give a favourable answer (Genesis 41: 16). Joseph allowed the Lord to speak through him to Pharaoh, and as believers, whenever we are confronted with a challenge, we must also yield ourselves to the Lord and let Him manifest His power through us.

Our main Scripture meditation today reminds us that Jesus came to the earth to destroy the work of the devil. It was His sacrificial death that destroyed the devil’s legal hold on humankind (Romans 4: 25), and it was His resurrection that gave believers the confidence to resist the devil (James 4: 7). Note that even before His death, Jesus remarked to His disciples, saying that He had seen satan falling from heaven like lightning (Luke 10: 18). This meant that the devil’s right to function in the heavenly realms had already been withdrawn before this point. Jesus therefore came to earth and died to redeem us so that the devil would have no right to function either in heaven or in the lives of believers (1John 3: 8b).

The devil has no right in the life of a believer, so all he does is to throw tantrums that aim to delude the children of God and attempt to prevent the establishment of the Kingdom of God. However, these are merely “attempts”, because we know the reality, which is that he has been defeated (Colossians 2: 15). This is why we study the Word of God and give ourselves to prayer, because through these, we become keenly aware of the victory that Jesus secured for us, and we receive the boldness to declare it (2Corintians 2: 14).

The Bible is indeed replete with wondrous miracles that Jesus did while He was on earth, and studying them reassures us of His power in a way that fills us with confidence. In fact, Jesus’ first miracle in the Gospels was turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana, and this is significant today for every believer who is faced with challenging circumstances. Running out of wine was a manifestation of scarcity or lack, and it was a work of the devil. But once Jesus was consulted, He destroyed the works of the devil, by providing an abundant supply of great tasting wine. Jesus also destroyed the works of the devil when He healed the blind, lame and deaf, and when He raised the dead.

Regardless of the challenges you may be facing, invite Jesus into your situation and you will see an end to the work of the devil. Since Jesus already accomplished the defeat of the devil on the cross, we can trust Jesus to destroy every work of the devil that we observe in our circumstances.

Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil!

Prayer: Dear Father in heaven, I thank You for loving me so much that You sent Jesus to die for my sins, to set me free from my fears, and to destroy the work of the devil. Dear Lord Jesus, I invite You into every challenging circumstance that I am experiencing, and I ask that You manifest Your grace and strength. I receive Your wisdom to declare Your counsel and to walk in the victory that You have already accomplished for me, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
