Scripture Reading: Genesis 1:27-28 and Acts 10: 2 (NIV)

14th May - 20th May, 2018

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth."  He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly.

It is important to bear in mind that success in life begins with the fear of God. The decaying state of our world today is largely because of a lack of the fear of God. To fear God means to be in awe of Him, to revere, admire, respect, and to hold Him in highest esteem. So, a “God Fearing marriage” is a marriage where God is revered, admired, respected, held in high esteem and worshipped (Psalm 128: 1- 6).

Marriage is an important institution ordained by God to fulfil God’s divine mandate for humanity. God’s purpose for marriage is to fill the earth with people who have attributes and characters like Himself. When Psalm128: 1 says, “Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in His ways”, the second part of the verse explains the first part. This means that walking in God’s ways confirms that you respect Him and hold Him in high esteem. Living like this guarantees your blessings.

In a “God-fearing marriage”, the focus is God rather than self. Indeed, for the God-fearing Christian, the focus is God rather than self. Apostle Paul declared that his aim in life was not to promote his own agenda or personal motives, but to serve and promote Jesus (Galatians 2: 20- 21). Building a God-fearing marriage is not about self-gratification, but about submitting to one-another out of reverence for God (Ephesians 5: 21).

In the Biblical model of a God-fearing or God-centred marriage, the husband is the head, and his headship is to be sacrificial and dedicated. It is to this headship that the wife is called to submit, and thus, you both model the relationship between Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5: 21-33). It is God Himself Who instituted this model (1 Corinthians 11: 3- 4), and because He made us, He knows the capacities in which we would function optimally. We must therefore not allow so-called modern ideas to distort or counter the supremacy of God’s Word (Romans 3: 4).

As you work at building a God-fearing marriage, here are a few things to bear in mind:

(a) If you are not married yet, seek God’s counsel before you say yes to anyone.

(b) If you are married, make up your mind to stay in the journey, instead of quitting.

(c) Be mindful of the fact that you need each other, so do not entertain pride or malice.

(d) Be united in purpose, and fight the same cause.

(e) Show appreciation for each other, irrespective of your challenges.

(f) Maintain the habit of praying together.

In a God-fearing marriage, the focus is God, rather than self…!

Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, I thank You for the awesome example of Jesus’ sacrificial love for the Church, and indeed for Your everlasting love for me. Thank You Lord for drawing my attention to the importance of building a God-fearing marriage. I ask for the grace to prioritise You and to keep You at the centre of my emotions and affections. In my marriage, or in the one I hope to build, I receive Your strength to build it with You at the centre, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
