Scripture Reading: Luke 18: 6 - 8 (NLT)

5th March - 11th March, 2018

Then the Lord said, “Learn a lesson from this unjust judge. Even he rendered a just decision in the end. So don’t you think God will surely give justice to his chosen people who cry out to him day and night? Will He keep putting them off? I tell you, He will grant justice to them quickly! But when the Son of Man returns, how many will He find on the earth who have faith?”

Everyone needs to have a sense of purpose concerning life and existence. God deliberately created each individual with a plan, vision and an agenda, and He implanted the sense of purpose into us (Proverbs 16: 4a). In our main Scripture reading, we see that although Joseph had recurring dreams, it appears that his 11 brothers had no clue about purpose or vision.

God created each individual with a plan, and He implanted dreams in our hearts that give us a sense of purpose. It is important to note that we cannot pursue lives of purpose and meaning without God’s help, and this is why we pray and depend on God’s help. Depending on God through prayer is the wisest and surest way to pursue a life of purpose. Thus, the Bible tells us to keep on praying in the Spirit, at all times and with all kinds of prayers (Ephesians 6: 18).

The first verse of the chapter from our Scripture reading reinforces our understanding of prayer. It starts by saying, ‘One day Jesus told his disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up' (Luke 18: 1). Jesus narrated this story to reveal God’s disposition towards our prayers. Unlike the unrighteous judge in the story, God loves us and is favourably inclined to grant our requests. It is because God definitely desires to answer our prayers that we can approach our loving Father, who will not turn us down (John 6: 37b).

In giving us dreams and visions for our lives, God has also given us the responsibility to live according to the visions He has given us and to walk in the reality of these dreams. Therefore, regardless of what may have come our way, we cannot afford to lose heart or give in to the challenging circumstances of life. We have been designed for accomplishment and fashioned for success. We must therefore contend for our dreams.

In relation to contending for our dreams, our Scripture reading stirs us up to action in many ways.

Here are a few things to note:
1. It is a call to establish our priorities. God ought to be our highest priority, and when we seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, every other thing will be added to us (Matthew 6: 33).
2. It is a call to faith. We must remain tenacious, even when there is no physical evidence as proof to hold on to, because the just shall live by faith (Galatians 3: 11). We can remain confident knowing that the Lord is our helper (Psalm 33:20).
3. It is a call to take our place in our homes, in society and in the nation as a whole. God created us to shine His light to the world around us (Matthew 5:16).
4. It is a call to take action, to be on guard and to be on the alert (1 Peter 5:8).
5. It is a call to perseverance, and we can draw encouragement from Apostle Paul and many other disciples who finished their races well (Hebrews 12: 1 and 2 Timothy 4: 7).

We were designed to accomplish purpose, therefore, we must contend for our dreams…!

Prayer: Dear Father God, I thank You for loving me with an everlasting love. I thank You for the reminder that You made me with a purpose and a plan, and that You have planted dreams in my heart which are in accordance with Your Word. I ask for Your grace and Your strength to contend for the dreams that You have given me and to stay in faith concerning them. I thank You because I know that You work in me to will and to do according to Your good pleasure, in Jesus’ Name. Amen!
