Genesis 41: 38- 40 (NIV)

4th June - 10th June, 2018

"So Pharaoh asked them, “Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the Spirit of God?” Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you. You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit to your orders. Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you.”

Since the year began, we have been considering the theme of Divine Influence. In keeping with this theme, the meditations for this week will challenge you to make room for your next level, and adjust your life for increased influence.

It is commonly said that “we live life on levels and experience it in stages”. This was true for Joseph, because the various stages and levels in his life were characterised by remarkably difficult events, yet His dependence on God prepared Him for progress. The five stages in Joseph’s life were in his father’s house, as a slave, as a prisoner, as a prime minister, and finally as a leader with global influence. Our main Scripture reading indicates the level that God had ordained for Joseph to attain, however, his progression between stages was characterised by tests and trials which he overcame. Teachers generally do not move students up to the next class until they have passed the test in their current class.

The rate at which we will move to the next level is directly proportional to how much room we give in our lives for the next level. More importantly, we must note that God only promotes people who will do His will to the next level! This point is emphasised in Psalm 105: 17- 19 and in the Amplified Version of Romans 8: 28, which says: 'We are assured and know that [God being a partner in their labour] all things work together and are [fitting into a plan] for good to and for those who love God and are called according to [His] design and purpose'.

There are three attributes which indicate that one is ready for the next level- godliness, faithfulness and selflessness. The story of Joseph is replete with incidents where he exercised these attributes, and it is in our interest to build on them:

(a) Godliness: This means seeking for God’s will to be done to, in and through you. Joseph exercised godliness when Potiphar’s wife sought to entice him to adultery (Genesis 39: 9), and when he ascribed the glory and credit to God before attempting to interpret Pharaoh’s dream (Genesis 41: 16).

(b) Faithfulness: This is the effective stewardship of God’s resources. Joseph was faithful in caring for his brothers even though they had been nasty to him (Genesis 50: 19- 21).

(c) Selflessness: This means serving God by being His extension to others. Selfless people serve at their own expense, just so that they can be a blessing (Genesis 37: 17).

In order to make room for your next level, tell God that you are giving Him room to have His way, meditate on His Word, and act as He directs you.

The people that God moves to the next level are those that are prepared to do His will…!

Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, thank You for Your everlasting love for me, and for sending me Your Word about Your desire to promote me. I ask Lord for Your grace to focus on building the virtues of godliness, faithfulness and selflessness. Today I surrender my heart to You, and I give You room to have Your way in my life. Thank You because it is You Who causes me both to will and do Your good purpose, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
