The Dawn of a New Day

Scripture Reading: Matthew 28: 1- 2 and 5-6 (NIV)

2nd April - 8th April, 2018

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.

The events of the Day known as “Good Friday” were awful for the disciples of Jesus, because they thought that Jesus’ death meant that their hope and the hope of Israel was lost. However, the story did not end on Friday, because on Sunday morning, God’s awesome plan of redemption was made known through Jesus’ resurrection from the dead.

One beautiful truth that we can take from the world-changing event of Jesus’ resurrection is that there is hope beyond your current reality! Your current reality is not all there is to see, so you must not draw a conclusion when God is still at work. Beyond Friday, there was another day that dawned, bringing good news with it!

From our Scripture reading, we see that on the third day after Jesus’ death, Heaven sent an angel to influence what was happening on earth. The angel rolled away the stone, and then sat on it. The stone represents negative conclusions that the devil may have drawn against your life, such as sickness, poverty and nightmares. These stones are all rolled away on account of Jesus’ resurrection! Believe this and declare it over yourself.

Please note that the angel did not roll the stone away so that Jesus could come out of the grave. Jesus had already risen and come out of the grave, because He was not bound by time and space. The sealed tomb could not keep Him bound or locked away. Rather, the angel rolled the stone away for two reasons:

(a)   To reveal the futility and the weakness of enemy’s power. In Matthew 27: 62-66, upon the request of some Jewish leaders, Pilate the Roman Governor had stationed guards to watch the tomb, and had put a seal on the tomb. Nevertheless, these guards could not stop the move of the power of God when Jesus rose up (Matthew 28: 4)!

(b)   To reveal to the Church that Jesus had risen! The stone that covered the opening to the tomb was very heavy, but with the rolling away, the disciples and the women who followed Jesus’ ministry could have access to see the empty tomb, and access to witness the power of God (Matthew 28: 6-7).

Jesus rose from the dead just as He had said He would (Matthew 28: 6). His Word did not fail and this is an invitation to the Church to hold on to the Word of Christ. His Word is sure and stands forever irrespective of adverse circumstances. The story of resurrection is a proof that in Christ, darkness will not last forever. Beyond the dark hours of your life, a new day will dawn! Jesus’ resurrection validates everything He said, so you can trust His Word wholeheartedly.

Christ’s resurrection signals the dawn of a new day, and gives you hope for the future…!

Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, thank You for loving me and for dying for my sins. Thank You that through your death and resurrection, I have been redeemed and I have peace with You. I thank You Lord that Your resurrection speaks life into every area of my life. So Lord, I partake of Your divine life and strength, and I place my confidence in You, in Jesus’ Name. Amen!
